Start and end the day right - we explain why it's all about the Double Cleanse

There has been a long standing tradition of cleansing twice a day - morning and night, with your everyday cleanser. I followed this pattern for years, as I’m sure many of you do in some way, shape or form, but that was until I changed to the Korean double cleanse routine. It really is the best way to completely remove the day’s dirt, grime and makeup. Without the proper tools for the job though, I started out quite simply using my foaming cleanser twice - the same way you would wash your hair twice on really bad days. But this method wasn’t all too effective and I actually suffered from breakouts and dry skin. My normal foaming cleanser was drying out my skin and was too harsh in the mornings. Dehydrated skin damages the skin’s natural barrier (the outer layers of the skin) which can lead to acne. These protective outer layers function to keep the skin moist, smooth, and keep the bad stuff out. So what’s the trick to double cleansing?

1. Oil Based Cleansers

Double cleansing in the Korean skincare routine starts with using an oil based cleanser first to effectively remove the day’s build-up of sebum and makeup without drying out the skin. Why is it we use an oil based cleanser? Oil attracts oil, and it really is the only way of getting a deep cleanse that a foam cleanser can’t give you. There are oil liquid cleansers like the Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil and there are solid balm oil based cleansers, like Heimish All Clean Balm or Banila Co Clean it Zero. I personally use the Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil as I find it more effective on my acne prone skin. It’s made up of natural oils extracted from black beans which control sebum production and soothe the skin. It also contains black sesame oil and blackcurrent seed oil which contain antioxidants and vitamins to nourish your skin. The Klairs line is perfect for those with sensitive skin as it’s incredibly gentle. Klairs Double Cleanse

2. Foam Based Cleansers

After using the oil cleanser, secondly cleanse with a foam cleanser to remove dirt and impurities. There are many foam cleansers I love - for the evening foam step I tend to use Benton’s Honest Cleansing Foam. It’s a simple, rich, creamy foam that lathers well and effectively washes away the day’s dirt. It also has botanical extracts to moisturise and smooth the skin. Benton Cleanser

Using Cleansing Tools

Using a cleansing tool is very important, as it makes your cleansers work that much harder. I’ve generally always used a muslin cloth or Konjac sponges. We offer a range of Konjac Sponges here at Buttermilk Skincare for all different skin types. Made with Konjac, a moisture rich fibre they gentle deep clean pores. Pink Face Konjac Sponge

Gentle Morning Cleanse

Double cleansing in the morning can be quite intense on your skin and I would only recommended doing a double cleanse if you have very oily skin. I only do a single gentle cleanse in the morning to make sure I don’t dry out my skin. I’m flirting between two products at the moment. If my skin feels dry or in the winter months I tend to use Klairs Rich Moist Foaming Cleanser. It’s a hypoallergenic facial wash with the power of hyaluronic acid it helps the skin retain water. It also has Aloe Vera and Tea Tree extracts to sooth the skin. I love the pump, it dispenses foaming bubbles. Klairs Foaming Cleanser If my skin is feeling particularly oily, spotty or it’s been a humid night, I’ll use Cosrx Low PH Good Morning Cleanser. This low PH cleanser softly removes dead cells and excess oils without disturbing the skins PH. Essentially that’s what you want to do in the morning, lightly cleanse without disturbing the skin. If you would like to try a Korean Skincare Routine for Oily Skin try using the Cosrx Low PH Good Morning Cleanser, their range is perfect for oily, acne prone skin.
